Cover-Bridge San Luis Rey Cover small.jpg"Thornton Wilder wrote The Bridge of San Luis Rey over the period of a year, from the summer of 1926 to that of 1927. By the end of 1928, The Bridge had won the Pulitzer Prize and become a staggering commercial success. Well received by critics on both sides of the Atlantic who called it "masterful," 'masterpiece,' and a 'triumph,' 'The Year of the Bridge' ended with 223,170 copies sold in a total of seventeen printings. 50,000 copies were sold in Great Britain alone.

From the beginning, starting with Norwegian, Hungarian and German translations arranged in 1928, The Bridge of San Luis Rey has proven to be a significant perennial international presence in more than thirty languages, including Burmese and Thai." --Excerpted from Tappan Wilder's Afterword to 2003 edition of The Bridge of San Luis Rey, published by HarperCollins.
